As a native of eastern North Carolina, Dr. Owens is invested in research related resource security, resilience, and well-being in rural communities. A biocultural anthropologist by training, her work broadly focuses on inequality and human well-being using access to basic resources and healthcare as avenues of inquiry. She have conducted mixed-methods research internationally in Ethiopia and domestically in the United States on these themes. 

Dr. Owens welcomes opportunities to mentor and collaborate both within UNCW and across institutions.
